Did you notice that we now have 12 windowboxes? Two have the test flowers and the rest are ready for planting by the kids if that plan works out. We need volunteers to water them each day with a watering can!
Sixteeen members of the PS/MS 278 school community attended District 10 Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez’s “State of Northen Manhattan and Marble Hill” address on Sunday afternoon. Several in our group met either the council member or a member of his staff. 2nd grader Dax (pictured with Council Member Rodriguez) took the opportunity to thank Council Member Rodriguez for the computers at our school. Principal Maureen Guido also personally expressed our gratitude for his support of our school and acknowledged our parent representation at the meeting. We thank the members of our school community who shared of their personal time this past weekend to attend the meeting on behalf of our school.
On Friday March 21 – 278 and our WITS Chef Anne took a Field Trip to L’Apicio in the East Village/Lower East Side to learn more about delicious, good for you foods! Gabe Thompson was there with his chef de cuisine. Everythng went off wonderfully and the students were really impressed. Bon Apetite 278!
On Friday, March 14th, 278 celebrated our many cultures with dance, song, poems and speaches! So many wonderful cultures were celebrated including our community’s shared heritages – including the Dominincan Republic, Ireland, China and Mexico just to name a few.
On Monday March 24th and Wednesday March 26th, the K-4th grade classes – led by our dance instructor from the 92nd Street Y – Ms. Carina – danced and danced danced! The students worked very hard on their steps and moves – a special thank you to Ms. Carina and all the classroom teachers who support the arts and the 278 dance program!
On Friday, March 14th, our Title 1 and Wellness Committees worked together to bring our 3rd annual family fun night to all – there was yoga, zumba, soccer, crafts and a free dinner sponsored by Chop’t Salad Company – healthy and fun going together hand in hand at 278!
On March 7th, parents, teachers and staff came together to give the 7th and 8th graders a dance to remember! The food was amazing (as usual- thanks to Carmen and crew) and Richard Tatum provided an amazing light show! It was certainly a night to remember!
On Friday November 8th, our 278 Parents and Kids dug up the dirt around the trees on 220th so that the kids could plant the daffodil bulbs around our new tress. A HUGE thank-you to all of the parents who helped out with the Fall Bulb Planting Event today. It was super fun and the kids and teachers seemed really into it and appreciative of the opportunity to play in the dirt and experience nature.

The 4th graders are walking in the parade due to the diligence and hard work of Monica Crawford who started a petition because the 3rd graders did not walk last year due to Hurricane Sandy! Go 278!
Friday October 18th was a BEAUTIFUL day and the 278 students had a fantastic Walk-A-Thon! The MS students walked from 8:30-10am and K-5 walked from 10am-11:30am. The Walk-A-Thon money raised this year will go to restore our beloved 278 Arts programs which had to be reduced due to DOE budget cuts! Go 278!
Mr. Quinto, Ms. Spence and our parents and students came together on Wednesday, June 12th for a wonderful concert full of music! Our 278 Chorus, 278 Bank, Violin Ensemble, and classes 101, 301 and 302 gave wonderul performances – take a look at the pictures below and the videos on our Youtube channel! Special thanks to our 278 community who made this an afternoon to remember!
Our SEM 1st-5th graders participated in their SEM trips on Wednesday, June 5th – trips included excursions to the the Planetarium, the BronxFamily Court, a trip exploring NYC’s best bridges, a trip to the the Museum of Natural History and the Museum of the American Indian and lots more!
On Tuesday, May 28th the K-5 classes had Field Day in Baker Field! There was a long jump, water races, face painting and all the yummy watermelon you could eat! Many thanks to our staff, teachers and PTA volunteers for making this a day to remember!
Our 5th graders got a taste of history on as they went to view the NYC 911 Memorial in April. Take a look at this beautiful and peaceful place to conntemplate the sacrafice of so many Americans.
On Wednesday, May 22nd, our very own 3rd, 4th and 5th graders made their way to Carnegie Hall with “practice, practice, practice…” They played their recorders and watched and listened to a presentation called ‘The Orchestra Rocks” featuring the St. Luke’s Orchestra. A very musical time was had by all.
Our 278 Dance Students had their annual recital on 05/06 and 05/08 – Ms. Carina and Mr. Quinto put together a fantastic show. On 05/06 : Classses 201, 202, 301, 401 and 402 performed and on 05/08 at 1pm: Classes K001, K 002, 302, 101 and 102 performed. It was a beautiful event! The 278 Annual Multicultural Celebration was held on Wednesday, March 6th – we took a trip around the world landing in many places like China, Bulgaria, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and many more! On Career Day we welcomed members of today’s work force into our school to speak with students K-8. Professionals from retail, firefighters, customer service, theater and business, as well as public officials, civil servants, carpenters, entrepreneurs, beauticians, pilots, musicians, artists, scientists, engineers, nurses, and EMT’s were some of our guest speakers. Parent and teacher participation makes this event both rich and meaningful – congratulations to all who lent their talents to 278 this year!
Fitness, great food and fun were all a part of our first annual Wellness in the Schools Family Fun Night! Our 278 families came to the school and enjoyed a FREE dinner sponsored by Chipotele Restaurants and participated in yoga and soccer. A great time was had by all!
On Tuesdays and Thursdays in February, the 278 Title 1 committee sponsored FREE Yoga and Zumba for parents in the auditorum. It was good for you and it was super FUN! Many parents came in from the cold and snow and got moving for good heath! Many thanks to Joanne for her enthusiasm and dedication to the idea that exercise can be fun!
