Mr. Stephen Jackson, our science teacher, received a personal phone call from Chancellor Walcott congratulating him on being one of 11 teachers in NYC to receive the Big Apple Teacher of the Year Award for 2013. Mr. Jackson is also one of 18 Teacher of the Year Award winners from “Education Update” magazine this year. We are all so proud to have Mr. Jackson as part of our 278 family!
Our SEM 1st-5th graders participated in their SEM trips on Wednesday, June 5th – trips included excursions to the the Planetarium, the BronxFamily Court, a trip exploring NYC’s best bridges, a trip to the the Museum of Natural History and the Museum of the American Indian and lots more!
On Tuesday, May 28th the K-5 classes had Field Day in Baker Field! There was a long jump, water races, face painting and all the yummy watermelon you could eat! Many thanks to our staff, teachers and PTA volunteers for making this a day to remember!
Our 5th graders got a taste of history on as they went to view the NYC 911 Memorial in April. Take a look at this beautiful and peaceful place to conntemplate the sacrafice of so many Americans.
On Wednesday, May 22nd, our very own 3rd, 4th and 5th graders made their way to Carnegie Hall with “practice, practice, practice…” They played their recorders and watched and listened to a presentation called ‘The Orchestra Rocks” featuring the St. Luke’s Orchestra. A very musical time was had by all.
Our 278 Dance Students had their annual recital on 05/06 and 05/08 – Ms. Carina and Mr. Quinto put together a fantastic show. On 05/06 : Classses 201, 202, 301, 401 and 402 performed and on 05/08 at 1pm: Classes K001, K 002, 302, 101 and 102 performed. It was a beautiful event! The 278 Annual Multicultural Celebration was held on Wednesday, March 6th – we took a trip around the world landing in many places like China, Bulgaria, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and many more! Career Day was Thursday, February 28th, 2013!
On Career Day we welcomed members of today’s work force into our school to speak with students K-8. Professionals from retail, firefighters, customer service, theater and business, as well as public officials, civil servants, carpenters, entrepreneurs, beauticians, pilots, musicians, artists, scientists, engineers, nurses, and EMT’s were some of our guest speakers. Parent and teacher participation makes this event both rich and meaningful – congratulations to all who lent their talents to 278 this year!
Fitness, great food and fun were all a part of our first annual Wellness in the Schools Family Fun Night! Our 278 families came to the school and enjoyed a FREE dinner sponsored by Chipotele Restaurants and participated in yoga and soccer. A great time was had by all!
On Tuesdays and Thursdays in February, the 278 Title 1 committee sponsored FREE Yoga and Zumba for parents in the auditorum. It was good for you and it was super FUN! Many parents came in from the cold and snow and got moving for good heath! Many thanks to Joanne for her enthusiasm and dedication to the idea that exercise can be fun!
Last Thursday, our 278 fitness guru mom Joanne cooked up a pot of healthy cabbage soup with Chef’s Anne and Gabe from WITS and Sarah our WITS PTA liason. The soup is Joanne’s special receipe for fighting flu – so yummy and so good for you! Many thanks to all the parent volunteers who made this Winter Cafe day a BIG succcess
Mrs. Kaufman and her SEM students once again brought their acting skills center stage in their January 2013 production of “School House Rock”! The 278 family is so lucky to have such dedicated teachers and staff who love the arts! Go 278!
On January 24th, our 1st-8th grade students set up around the school and gave presentations on what they learned in the first semester’s SEMs. They learned about oceans, magical thinking, buildings and bridges, dinosaurs, monologues and much much more. We at 278 think our SEMs are pretty awesome! At 278, we know learning can be fun! Go 278!
A Cooking demo for parents by Celebrity Chef Ellie Krieger, took place on Thursday January 10th in the Auditorium. The event was very welll attended by our foodie parents. Chef Krieger prepared chicken fried rice, chicken spinach quesadillas and curried chicken salad! Yum! Also, receipes and helpful meal planning tips made this an event to remember.
The Storfront Science Classes are set to begin on Tuesday, January 7th . The 2:20 Buildings class is almost full, a few spots remain. The 3:30 Critters class has 3 students registered – we need a minimum of 10 students for the session to take place. If it helps, Mrs. Guido will hold any 3:30pm session student in the library to work on their homework until the session begins. Please register on the Storfront website www.storfrontscience.com

Mr. Quinto and all the wonderful performers at 278 came together on 12/19 to celebrate their musical accomplishments and the upcoming holidays! There were amazing solo performances, our brand new Choir sang and of course the Kindergarten strutted their stuff on the stage in their very first performance. The event was a delight! Special shout out to Mr. Quinto, the classroom teachers and the 7th grade runners who all made this a “show to remember”.
On December 11, 2012 our 278 classes had a Holiday sign along with our parents and volunteers – they heard about holiday traditions all over the world and sang their little hearts out. A big thank you to our parent volunteers who made this an exciting afternoon of song!
In October , Mr. Feltman secured a grant from Spoons Across America (spoonsacrossamerica.org). During their time in our school, they gave our third grade students an opportunity to taste and describe the following powders: salt,sugar,cocoa powder and ascorbic acid. They also sampled four varieties of apples and described each of them using their five senses. The third graders were actively engaged and loved this interactive experience!
