PARENT WORKSHOPS/ DISCUSSIONS/ MOVEMENT CLASSES

This Saturday, January 13 a series of workshops for parents entitled Positive Adult Role Models from 9:00AM to 11:00AM in the library.  This is a series of workshops to help guide parents on positive ways to model discussions with your children about their changing bodies, building healthy relationships, and healthy mind-body care.

Workshops will be held every Saturday through January, and in February and March we will have yoga, and zumba.  All are welcome, bring a friend, join the discussion.   A flyer was sent home with your student.

For those who have not heard, our long time Principal, Maureen Guido is retiring this year. On June 8th from 5pm until 10pm we will celebrate her countless contributions to our community at Brown Sugar, 5060 Broadway. This is a ticketed, adult only event.

Field Day 2017 rescheduled for 5/30

Join the students of PSMS 278 for an all out competition on May 30! Volunteers are welcome to help run the event. Our activities are planned to take place at Columbia’s Baker’s Field right down the street.

Free Family Movie Night! February 10 @ 6:00pm

Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life was screened at the PSMS 278 auditorium at 6:00pm (doors open at 5:30pm)

Join your school community for this midwinter tradition at the school auditorium. All proceeds from our cash only concessions go to benefit the PTA.

Please note this is a free event but all students are expected to attend with a designated adult chaperone. This is not a drop off event.

278 is a No Place for Hate School!

Our Career Day guides were represented 278 at the Anti Defamation League’s annual No Place for Hate® 2016 Recognition Ceremony last week!  No Place for Hate® is designed to create inclusive school communities by promoting unity and respect, and empowering schools to reduce bullying, name-calling and other expressions of bias.

Disney’s Aladdin KIDS Friday, 01/22 at 6:00pm

One Night Only!
Aladdin KIDS performs at PSMS 278

On Friday, January 22nd at 6pm. Please do not miss Ms Kaufman and Ms Everett’s SEM class perform a stage adaptation of the classic Disney movie, Aladdin! Our very own PSMS 278 students will be performing the unforgettable characters of: Jafar, Iago, Jasmine, Aladdin and who can forget the Genie!

Come listen to Arabian Nights, A Whole New World, One Jump and Friend Like Me in our school auditorium!

Cash admission at the door: $3 for adults and $2 for students.

Winter Concert 2015!

Once again it’s time for our Winter Concert! Wednesday, December 16th.  There will be two shows as follows:

9:00am – 10:13am (1st Show) 

  • K-001, K-002, 101, 102, 201, 202, 301, 302, 601, 602 and 151
  • Violin Class
  • Chorus
  • Ms. Sanchez’ Dance Group 

 

Transitions will be accompanied by our pianists:  Nayia Chrysanthopoulos, Harper Shaw, Mark Moreiras, Kennedy Moreiras, Isaiah Shikany, Clara Shikany, Owen Bradley, Joseph Garcia and Kassandre Fjotland.

At this first performance, the Middle School will be in the audience.  The performers will perform and then be escorted back to their classrooms.

Students should come dressed appropriately in their festive party clothes. (Black and white is always lovely.)

*Parents are invited to attend both shows if desired, however seating at the second show will be limited as the students are also in the audience. There will be more seats available during the morning show.

Movie Night – Mr. Peabody & Sherman

Movie Night at 278 02/15

IMG_7643Our first family movie night of the school year was Friday, February 6th at 6pm. This year, the feature presentation (drums rolling)…was Mr. Peabody & Sherman. this event a huge success and a great way to beat the winter blues.  Thanks to all the volunteers who pitched in and for the school administration and staff for their support!

 

The Arts at 278 Walkathon – October 17th!

IMG_0006K-8 students walked ona beautiful fall day at Baker Field on Friday, October 17th to raise money to fund our Arts programs! The results and winners will be announced next month!

Pleadge sheets will be accepted until 11/7 – so happy fundraising! The materials (including a walkathon pledge and information sheets) are attached!  Go 278!

 

Flat Stanley – The Musical!

IMG_3953On Friday 06/06 at 6pm, our 278 students put on a wonderful production Flat Stanley – The Musical!  Mrs. Kaufman’s and Mr. Quinto did a tremendous job co-directing and the students, staff and teachers worked so hard to bring these characters to life!  Check out a reprise of the performance at the Spring Concert on June 11th at 9am.

Spring Fair 2014!

Saturday, May 31st was Spring Fair – what a great day – events included – giraffe making, face painting, making boats and planes, 2 bounce houses, dunk tank (dunk the teacher!), planting station, minute to win it and so much more!

Field Day 2014!

image-SMILE image-SMILE2On Thursday, May 29th our K-8 students and some very enthusiastic parents enjoyed Field day 2014 at Baker Field!  There was a water race, face painting, obstacle courses and great fun in the sun!

 

PS/MS 278 Represents at State of District Address

Dax & Ydanis Rodriguez 04.06.2014Sixteeen members of the PS/MS 278 school community attended District 10 Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez’s “State of Northen Manhattan and Marble Hill” address on Sunday afternoon. Several in our group met either the council member or a member of his staff. 2nd grader Dax (pictured with Council Member Rodriguez) took the opportunity to thank Council Member Rodriguez for the computers at our school. Principal Maureen Guido also personally expressed our gratitude for his support of our school and acknowledged our parent representation at the meeting. We thank the members of our school community who shared of their personal time this past weekend to attend the meeting on behalf of our school.
